Scammonden Water Sailing Club

One of the most enjoyable features of Scammonden Water is the sight of the colourful sails of the dinghies which gracefully tack back and forth most weekends. There is a fine public car park situated high above the dam from which spectators may obtain an excellent view of the water. The following is a guide which may help to identify some of the classes of dinghies sailed on Scammonden Water.

Sailing is a quiet sport, and one which provides both relaxation and excitement. It suits young people of all ages and is ideal for the family who want an activity in which all members can partake.

Scammonden Water Sailing Club was formed in 1971. The Old Vicarage provides an ideal headquarters where members can enjoy reasonable facilities including hot showers, tea room and an excellent bar.

The Management Committee of the Club is most aware of the need for a balanced amenity on Scammonden Water and every encouragement is given to members who want either competitive sailing or just a cruise with the family. A healthy relationship also exists between the club and the Local Authority Youth Organisations within which young people are encouraged to sail. A limited amount of canoeing training and competition has also taken place.

Many developments are planned by the club in the way of improved facilities and membership is still open. Any enquiries should be addressed to the Secretary of the Scammonden Water Sailing Club.
