THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME SCAMMONDEN
Some think that the word Scammonden is a corruption of Cambodunum, the Roman station excavated at Slack, Outlane. Centuries later men began to use the word as their surname. From 1275 to 1325 there were several families bearing the name Scammonden living locally, then the name seems to disappear. It is not mentioned in the Poll Tax returns of 1379, neither as a place nor a family name, though the name still lives on in parts of South Yorkshire.
